WALES RUGBY IN THE SPOT LIGHT

Mike Phillips has once again put Wales rugby in the spotlight after a recent bustup. The scrum-half fought with door…

SPRINGBOKS BEAT WALES

The Springboks easily beat the Welsh rugby union in the semi-final of the recent cup tournament. Alex Cuthbert and Kristian Phillips put Wales ahead in Edinburgh before Bernado Botha, Kyle Brown and Paul Delport put South Africa in control.

Cuthbert’s late try and Warren Davies’ kick was not enough as Wales lost 22-19 after beating France in the quarters.

Adam Thomas and Jevon Groves scored as Wales defeated the French 13-10.

CARLING TALKS ABOUT COACH’S IMPOSING ATTITUDE

England legend Will Carling has said that the imposing attitude of Wales coach Warren Gatland does not suit them.

Carling says Gatland should pick James Hook at fly-half and “set him free”.

“Trying to play a set-piece and a restrained style… is not bringing the best out of the Welsh,” said Carling.

“It might be easy for me to say, but… when Wales are at their best and most dangerous is when they are just playing and taking risks.”

WILLIAMS TALKS ABOUT RETIREMENT

Wales wing Shane Williams has said that he wants to end his career at top. The Ospreys star has pledged to quit the international game after the World Cup, but wants to go out on a high.

“I’ll dread the day I hang my boots up because I’m doing a job at the moment that I wouldn’t change for the world,” he tells the Sport Wales programme.

“I’ll be 34 this year… and I want to finish at the top,” Wales’ record try-scorer told the BBC Sport Wales show.

HALFPENNY NAMED IN SQUAD

Cardiff Blues have named Leigh Halfpenny on the bench for their next game. The Wales wing has been out with an ankle injury since October, but back-row Xavier Rush (neck) is out despite completing a one-week suspension.

Centre Jamie Roberts makes his first start since surgery on a long-term wrist injury, replacing Tom Shanklin.

The Ospreys promote Andrew Bishop, Jamie Nutbrown, Paul James and Ian Gough to the starting line-up.

REES WANTS MISTAKES TO BE AVOIDED

Welsh captain Matthew Rees has asked the team to avoid any silly mistakes in the future. Wales were beaten by Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, while they were also held to a dismal draw by Fiji.

But Rees insists they have been competitive in all of the games. “We know at this level the difference is error and until we cut them out in our game, that’s going to be difficult to get results,” Rees said.
